1896 Athens Summer Olympics Participation Medal

DATE
Year: 1896
Decade: 1890s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

The first edition of the Modern Games was properly headquartered in the city where the Olympics were born millennia earlier, the ancient city of Athens, Greece. Here we encounter a participation medal presented to an athlete engaged in the historic event.

The medal features seated Nike holding laurel wreath, phoenix rising out of flames, Acropolis in background. Verso holds five-line Greek legend in laurel wreath.
