A Collective Explanatory Armenian Dictionary

DATE
Year: 1706
Decade: 1700s
Century: 18th (1701-1800)

The manuscript, written on paper by an unknown scribe in 1706, is an Armenian dictionary.

The dictionary includes words from a number of ancient explanatory dictionaries and words selected by the author of the dictionary from various texts from Armenian literature of Middle Ages.

The dictionary includes literary and dialect words, terms and proper names. Many of these words do not appear in modern Armenian dictionaries.

The short colophon of the book appears at the foot of the folio 1r which reads. “Սկիզբն եղև գրուս ի թուին ՌՃԾԵ” (“The beginning of this writing was in 1706”= “II started writing this in 1706”).

From the text on folio 1r we also learn that manuscript includes the so called “Homeric Lexicon” which is a dictionary including words used in the Homeric verses written by Homer in Iliad or Odyssey, and other literary works written in Hellenistic world, such as the grammar of Dionysius Thrax.

Some of the pages have occasional doodles, in the margins like those on folios 171v, 185v, 217v.

A prayer is added at the end of the dictionary on folio 228v.
