A haniwa is a unglazed terra-cotta sculpture arranged on and around the mounted tombs (kofun) of the Japanese elite dating from the Tumulus period (c. 250-552 A.D.). They were made for ritual use and buried with the dead. The Kofun period is the earliest era of recorded history in Japan, characterized by the influence of China and the Korean Peninsula where Buddhism and the Chinese writing system entered Japan.
