This is a manuscript of the Gospels of Matthew and Mark by the Reverend Henry Floy Roberts, written in 1870. The handwritten pages include the importance of the New Testament, a preface to the Interlinear New Testament, an introduction to the Gospel of Matthew, then the chapters of Matthew, followed by an introduction to the Gospel of Mark, and lastly the 16 chapters of Mark.From the label attached to the front endpaper: “This Monumental Work is the Original Manuscript Bible prepared by The Reverend Henry Floy Roberts a Pioneer Scholar in Biblical Revision As a Contribution in the Movement which finally provided a Revised Version of the Holy Scriptures for the English Speaking World,” added to the label “One of these cards was attached to each of the four volumes of Gospels placed in the Western Theological Seminary, later moved to Evanston. Ill. They are in better and more complete arrangement than this and are de luxe binding.” From the next page: “The Rev. Henry Floy Roberts, the author and writer of this work, was born in Jersey City in 1813. He was the great-grandfather of Warren and Harold Roberts. He spent most of his life as a clergyman of the Protestant Episcopal Church in or near New York and Brooklyn. The whole of the New Testament was translated in the same manner but only the first five books have been found. The deluxe edition contains a column on the right of each page with the Authorized Version. The author did most of the work in his later years after he had become very deaf. The loose leaves comprising this volume were ordered bound by C.E.B. Roberts in April 1945”, also penciled in at the top of this page is “For Warren”. The next three pages are typewritten “Sketch of the Life of RRev. Henry Floy Roberts by C. E. B. Roberts” from this was taken this paragraph “The chief literary work of his life was his interlinear translation of the Greek New Testament with original notes and comments. The manuscript of gospels in de luxe binding and consisting of four large volumes is in the keeping of the Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, 600 Haven St., Evanston, Illinois. Others of the bound manuscript volumes are in the possession of his grandchildren. Four forms in his handwriting appear on each page in different colored inks: the original Greek, the lexicon form and each greek word and his own literal translation of each word while the King James version is written in a wide margin. Specimen pages of preliminary manuscript may be available for some of his descendants” Handwritten in red ink on the next page is “The gospels of St. Matthew and St. Mark in the original Greek with interlinear translations in English by Henry Floy Robert Presbyter in the P. E. Church in the United States of America 1870”.
