According to scholar Andy Houwen, “It is dated Bunkyū 2 (1862) and the title page says ‘Kugatsu Nijūichinichi (9th Month 21st Day) Onōhon’ (Nō Book). This is the famous play Takasago. The old couple, who are revealed to be the spirits of the paired pines of Takasago and Sumiyoshi, sweep the unendingly falling evergreen pine needles of literary tradition and benevolent imperial rule.”
