According to scholar Tomoe Moriya, “This is from Oguni village in Echigo (present-day Niigata prefecture), close to Nagaoka where Etsu Sugimoto (nee Inagaki), the author of A Daughter of the Samurai, was born. Note the sects on the record; Zenshu and Jodo Shinshu. You may recall that Sugimoto wrote about local women (maids and famers/peasants) in her hometown donated their hair to Honganji in Kyoto, while her family temple belonged to Zenshu. Also Jodo Shin temple membership is usually quite large compared to Zenshu.”
According to scholar Romulo Ehalt, “The date reads 宝永四年, which would be 1707.”
