Archive of a Jewish Betar Member
An archive of a Jewish Betar member’s migration from Brazil to Israel dating to the 1940s.
An interesting archive of a person who was a member of the BETAR movement in Brazil, he probably immigrated to Israel in the 1950s.
The BETAR movement is a Revisionist Zionist youth movement founded in 1923 in Riga in Latvia. It was one of several right wing youth movements that arose at that time and adopted special salutes and uniforms. During World War II, BETAR was a source of recruits for both Jewish regiments that fought along side the British, and then for Jewish groups fighting against the British in Mandatory Palestine. Some of the most prominent politicians of Israel were Betarim in their youth, most notably prime ministers Yitzhak Shamir and Menachem Begin. Today BETAR promotes Jewish leadership on university campuses as well as in local communities.
