Armenian Brass Censer

DATE
Year: 600
Decade: 600s
Century: 7th (601-700)

An Armenian Brass censer, similar to others from the 6th to 7th centuries with scenes of the life of Christ. These were probably intended as a pilgrim souvenir, have been found throughout the Eastern Christian world and possibly made for or by Armenians. as many have Armenian provenance’s based on their being found at Armenian excavation sites. This particular censer bears a unique inscribed record. There is an Arabic “waaf” inscription along the top frieze. which says that this censer was given as a oath of allegiance by a Sarkis in the city of Mardin – probably in the 12th to 13th centuries.
