Armenian Celestial Map of the Zodiac

DATE
Year: 1749
Decade: 1740s
Century: 18th (1701-1800)

An Armenian Celestial Map of Solar System with signs of the Zodiac. Engraving, showing the geocentric system incl. the signs of Zodiac. One of four maps to be included in Sebastian Mekhitar’s Dictionary of Classical Armenian, published by Anton Bartoli in the same year. Apparently the very first Armenian map of the solar system.According to Voskanian, the publication of the four maps most probably preceded the publication of the dictionary, although all known copies of the map (like ours) already bear the pagination number 256 (where it was bound in the dictionary).
