Astronomical Instrument Dial

Century: 17th (1601-1700)

Once part of a large astrolabe (?), it contains 12 concentric circles, the outermost of which gives degrees. The caption on the top left reads ‘dinamana’ which means ‘length of day’. The entries on the right give the names of the months of the Indian solar calendar. Along the circles are observed entries of numbered lengths of time (in ghatika ?) which should allow the observation of particular celestial phenomena at a given moment of time.
