Baseball Belt Buckle

DATE
Year: 1937
Decade: 1930s
Century: 20th (1901-2000)

Japanese baseball belt buckle with a raised baseball design. A commemorative badge for a softball tournament among the employees of the Osaka city offices.

According to scholar Bob Leutner, “You don’t see a lot of things with “1940 = 2600″ style dates, which I’m sure carried a lot of baggage. (What is this system called in Japanese, one wonders.) This is a classic bit of odd cross-cultural stuff, isn’t it?”

Scholar Andrew Gebert answered, “Bob Leutner I noticed that also. I believe it’s called 皇紀. This seems to be a commemorative badge for a softball tournament among the employees of the Osaka city offices.”
