Early Japanese baseball magazine “Yakuyai.” The volume contains many pre-war baseball news and photos, including Russian-born Hall of Famer Victor Starffin, who would be interned as a spy a year later at the outbreak of the Pacific War. The cover also mentions that this issue would be available in Manchuria (Manchukuo), which was occupied by the Japanese Army at that time. At the outbreak of the Pacific War, baseball was considered “the enemy’s game” and banned in Japan. Many early cards and magazines were thrown away.
