Bible in Yiddish

DATE
Decade: 1820s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

The Entire Bible in Yiddish printed in Switzerland from 1822-1824. This translation was done anew in an attempt to complete the task taken upon himself by Moses Mendelssohn with his translation of the five books of Moses. Mendelssohn’s translation was the first translation to reflect the winds of modernity that led to the reform movement, this translation was a collaborative attempt to complete that translation. Translators of the various books of the Bible include the greatest scholars of the day, including Ahron Wolfsohn, David Otensoser, Yoel Brikk, David Friedlander.. This is the first Yiddish Bible of the Reform Movement.
