Box with Copper and Lead Chinese Characters

Decade: 1800s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

Box filled with copper and lead Chinese characters, from the first Chinese printer in Colonial Spain’s Cuba who most likely would have brought this from China when emigrating to Cuba. Photo shown of descendant Chinese print shop owner. Incredibly rare piece with great craftsmanship, with the metal printing pieces made of copper and likely lead notched together. Each piece represents a word in Chinese, a number of which are no longer in use today.
