Buddhism Print Book (with Tengu)

DATE
Century: 17th (1601-1700)
Notes: Genroku Era

Japanese woodblock print book on Buddhism, with a woodblock of the winged Tengu talking to a Buddhist monk. Buddhists considered Tengu to be a disruptive and evil spirit that was a harbinger of war and other bad things.

The tengu is Higo Ajari Koen, one of Honen’s teachers on Mt. Hiei. This is fascicle 10 of that compendia. The title slips on the covers are handwritten.
