Buddhism Print Book

DATE
Year: 1790
Decade: 1790s
Century: 17th (1601-1700)

Japanese print book on Buddhism.

According to scholar Peter Kornicki, “This is the third volume (of three) of the Ōjō yōshū (Essentials of rebirth; see the Wikipedia description) written by the Japanese monk Genshin in 895. By comparison with the copy in the National Institute of Japanese Literature, it is clear that the woodblock belong to the 1689 edition, though this copy was printed later.

At the back there is an appended bookseller’s catalogue (note that the margins are smaller than the main text, indicating that it is an addition rather than being part of the original edition) inserted by the Kyoto publisher Hanabusaya Jihei. Curiously, the NIJL copy, which was printed in 1790, has the same catalogue at the end, so this copy was probably printed at about the same time.”
