Buddhist Painting

DATE
Year: 1774
Decade: 1770s
Century: 18th (1701-1800)
Notes: An'ei 3

Early Buddhist painting. There are three deities represented together with sunrise, daytime, and sunset. This could be for fortune telling or predicting the future. The painting is signed Fujiwara, which was a famous clan or family at that time.

According to scholar Alexander Vesey, “Very interesting document that appears to have come from this shrine in Gunma Prefecture.”

According to scholar Sugihiko Uchida, “The person whose name is signed was a Shinto priest of Ikushina Shrine (生品神社)in Ohta-city, Gunma prefecture.”
