Cassius Clay/Sonny Liston Photograph

Year: 1963
Decade: 1960s
Century: 20th (1901-2000)

Heavyweight contender Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali), (left), recoils in mock horror from a pair of mink boxing gloves that champion Sonny Liston, (right), says he will use in their February 1964 fight, so that he won’t hurt Clay’s face. Others in photo are Liston’s adviser, Jack Nilon, (center), former champ Joe Louis who delivered a $1 million bid from Los Angeles, and holding the gloves, Milt Willner, a local promoter.

The pair signed for a heavyweight title bout to be staged in February, a likely site being Los Angeles.
