Confessor’s License Given to a Friar

DATE
Year: 1793
Decade: 1790s
Century: 18th (1701-1800)
Notes: November 11, 1793

License granted by the bishop of Mexico and the Canon of the Cathedral of Valladolid, Michoacan, to a presbyter so that he can take confessions to any man and woman of the City, indefinitely.

The license gives also the ability to be able to absolve sins, crimes and excesses- that is, except the ones determined by the Church.

It also includes a guideline of “reserved cases”, in which the presbyter is not authorized to absolve the sinner, such as homicide, contacting the demons, practicing magic arts, being already excommunicated, public blasphemy, sodomy, bestiality, incest etc.

The last page is a list of actions that could be cause of excommunication of the friar, such as not letting people come in to the churches, print books without license, directly charging for his services, and much more.
