Contract for Chinese Worker
China – Cuba. A labor contract for Chinese Slave “Colono.” A document related to Chinese slaves “colonos” that were brought to Cuba to work for Cuban owners. This document is a labor contract that would bound a “colono” to his owner. The colono had as little rights as a regular slave brought to Cuba by force and the only way to free themselves from the deadly labor was to runaway. Many Chinese colonos died from the horrific conditions they had to endure or committed suicide. The import of Chinese colonos was forbidden by the Chinese Government after investigations were conducted into the realities that awaited colonos in Cuba. The contract lists 8 articles that specify the rules and conditions for the colono. It is signed by the owner as well as the Chinese colono dated 1870.
