The great Mekhitar’s dictionary of Classical Armenian (First Volume), is the first Armenian-Armenian dictionary to be published consisting of the first volume for classical Armenian.

According to scholar Sebouh Aslanian, “A masterpiece to own, especially if you have volume 2 (1769) as well. I have both volumes but the maps are not there in my vol. 1. This was the first serious dictionary of the classical language of Armenian. Vol. 2 has words in colloquial or vernacular too.

The Mkhitarist atlas prepared for volume one of the dictionary (1749) was based in large measure on the first Armenian-language atlas printed in Amsterdam by archbishop Thomas Vanandets‘i in 1695. The latter was engraved by the Dutch master engravers, the brothers Hadrianus and Petrus Damianus Schoonebeek. See C.
