Domestic Military Report for Foreign Invasion

DATE
Year: 1867
Decade: 1860s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

Japanese hand painted and hand written manuscript book set: Domestic Military Report for Foreign Invasion (Kenroku) with illustrations regarding military technology and strategy. This rare manuscript report was compiled in the years before Commodore Perry opened Japan and during a time when Japan felt threatened by western powers. England was fighting the Opium Wars with Japan’s Asian neighbor China; Russia was in the disputed northern parts of Japan; French, British, and American warships as well as whaling ships were off the coast of Japan, some seeking to enter Nagasaki and Edo Bay etc.

Peter Kornicki, “The date on the cover corresponds with 1867.”
