Ehon Toyotomi Kunkôki – Part 5 and 7

DATE
Decade: 1860s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)
Notes: Published 1860 and 1868

According to scholar Peter Kornicki, “This work is Ehon Toyotomi Kunkôki, and you seem to have two sets each of parts 5 and 7. This is a long fictionalised account of Hideyoshi and the Toyotomi family and these volumes were published in 1860 and 1868. The author was Ryûsuitei Tanekiyo and the illustrations were done by Kuniyoshi (5) and Matsukawa Hanzan (7).”

This 10 volume set is an historical edition of the novel Taikōki. They are called the Ehon Toyotomi kunkôki, an illustrated and somewhat embellished account of the career of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the most brilliant generals in Japan’s history.
The complete publication consists of nine parts of 10 volumes each, for a total of 90 volumes. Each 10 volume set averages about 600 pages with around 160 fine woodblock prints by Kuniyoshi, who was one of the best artists of his age.
