Embroidered Silk and Applique Yantra Panel

DATE
Notes: 19th/20th century

Within an eight-pointed star various weapons of wrathful deities radiate from a central swastika symbol.

Yantra (यन्त्र) (literally “machine, contraption”) is a geometrical diagram, mainly from the Tantric traditions of the Indian religions. The swastika is an ancient religious and cultural symbol used as a symbol of divinity and spirituality in Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. The word “swastika” comes from Sanskrit and means “conducive to well being.” It was a symbol of good luck in the Western world until the 1930s when the German Nazi Party adopted it as an emblem of the Aryan race.
