Fan with women holding flags. Left has the Japanese military flag and flag of occupied China. Right has the Japanese flag and flag of Manchukuo. Middle holds the Order of the Golden Kite, Japan’s Medal of Honor.
According to scholar Sugihiko Uchida, “Written is a lyric of a famous Japanese wartime pop-song ‘My father, You were a Good Soldier’（「父よ、あなたは強かった」). Tanumaya-gofukuten田沼屋呉服店（kimono shop）is still in business in the same town, by the way.”
According to scholar Christopher Born, “The strange thing in the box is a Hagoita, for playing a kind of badminton type game called Hanetsuki. It’s made by Matsuya as a special issue. Couldn’t tell why it’s of a foreigner’s face, as they usually have beautiful Japanese ladies depicted in a classical style.”
