First Color Book Using the Chromolithographic Technique

Year: 1846

Juan Francisco Cabañas
Novena en Honor del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús.
México: Tipografía de R. Rafael, 1846.Includes an hymn whose music was composed by Don José María Erazo. The book has a beautiful luxurious binding and the interior is nicely decorated. However, what is special about this book is that it was the first one printed in color in Mexico. The history of the book is very interesting: Rafael de Rafael worked for Ignacio Cumplido, the foremost printer in the XIXth century in Mexico, but apparently they got into a fight and Rafael established his own print. A ruthless competition begun between those two and the biggest prize was to see who could print the first color book using the chromolithographic technique. History is not very clear about who REALLY made it first; the fact is that Rafael printed this book with the year 1846 and Cumplido printed his “Presente Amistoso” with the year 1847 imprinted inside.
