Japanese hand-written manuscript book on the Treaty of Nanking during the First Opium War. This is a Japanese manuscript report of the treaty signed by Great Britain and China at the close of the 1st Opium war (1839-1842). The Japanese were very interested in this event since it was China’s first “unequal” treaty and feared that foreign powers would be forcing their way into Japan soon. In fact, a decade later, Commodore Perry entered Japan, and soon after a series of unequal treaties were signed by Japan and other foreign powers.
This collection houses art and artifacts from China, Ethiopia, India and Japan.
