MATERIAL: Paper
TYPE: Manuscript
DIMENSIONS: 186 by 148 mm.
COMPONENTS: Five leaves of manuscript (one end leaf and paste down at front, three end leaves at back), with neatly written additions filling almost entire space of leaves, in good German vernacular hand, titles in ornamental capitals, all of that enclosing a printed book in a contemporary binding of brown leather over bevelled wooden boards, each board with panel stamp (scenes from Genesis; the Crucifixion, set within foliage, architectural frames, and all once gilt.
CONDITION: Metal clasps present (but loose), leather cracked at spine in places, losses to edges of board, else good condition, edges of book block speckled with color.
NOTES: This is a complete German Renaissance object in an excellent state of preservation, and the manuscript prayers are all the more appealing for their placing within a Lutheran devotional printed book, doubtless for use whilst preaching. The manuscript leaves contain preaching materials, including a long list of appeals to Christ and a lengthy prayer against the ‘pestilence’.
