Five Races of the World Print Book

DATE
Year: 1872
Decade: 1870s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

Japanese print book: Five Races of the World, including a humorous double page full color print of a Japanese Geisha meeting the five races of the World; a three-page full color print Map of Asia and the Middle East, with China, Japan, Korea (Choson), Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Russia, India, the Middle East, etc, and many small black-and-white woodblocks throughout the volume depicting people and places of the World.

According to scholar Jonathan Clements, “I can’t see a date on this book, but the map makes it possible to guess. Taiwan is not included in the map of Japan, so pre-1895, and Sakhalin in its entirety is, pre-1875. My guess is 1850s or 1860s.”

According to scholar Peter Kornicki, “The title is Sekai miyakoji and it was published in 1872. The author was the celebrated Kanagaki Robun.”
