The first Gay World Series softball tournament was held in San Francisco in 1977 with just three teams. The second annual series was held in New York City in September 1978. Of the five teams present, the San Francisco team, was disqualified for having too many non-gay players. The competition was eventually won by the Los Angeles Griffs.
