German Commemorative Medallion
A German commemorative medallion.
It is constructed of bronze (probably recast) and features the official seal of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I. On the verso, an inscription in German reading, “Emperor Frederick I, called Barbarossa, of the House Hohenstaufen, reigned 1152-1190, nephew of Conrad III.”
According to scholar Sven Saaler, “I have the feeling this must be from the late 19th or early 20th century. The “caption“ on the back looks pretty modern and there was a “Barbarossa“ boom in the 19th century, with people thinking that the foundation of the German Reich in 1871 was a “resurrection“ of Barbarossa‘s empire (which wasn’t really an empire, but anyway…).”
