Girk Kochetsyal Zen Hogevor

PRONUNCIATION: Girk Kochetsyal Zen Hogevor
DATE
Year: 1787
Decade: 1780s
Century: 18th (1701-1800)

Book with Armenian and Turkish letters by Hovhannes and Poghos printing house.

Scholar Haig Utidjian comments, “A very interesting volume, not least as bits of it seem bilingual – explaining in, or translating into, Turkish in Armenian script. Patriarch Yakob Nalean was one of the towering intellectuals of his era, and one of the great Armenian theologians of any time. His writings are extensive, wide-ranging, and not even his massive Commentary on the writings of At. Gregory of Narek have been given the thorough investigation they deserve. And, though he was very much Armenian Orthodox, he was very well read, and knowledgeable and appreciative of the great Catholic theologians whose writings were available to him. His legacy is crying out to be studied properly, but it is not always easy reading… I am a great admirer! His work to me symbolizes the magnificent, two-pronged revival in Armenian intellectual life – together with the foundation of the Mekhitarist Congregation (which too was largely nurtured by the intellectually and culturally fertile soil of Constantinople).”
