Four rare documents relating to the Territory of Arizona against Jesus Parez:1) Indictment of Jesus Parez and John Doe “(where true name is unknown to the Grand Jury)” for the crime of “an assault with an attempt and intent to commit murder.” The one page indictment, dated November 1883, is written out in ink and signed for A. M. Patterson, Graham County district attorney by deputy district attorney. This document, also signed by H. C. Hooker, foreman of the Grand Jury, is appended to 2) Minute Entry of Plea, dated November 5, 1885, in which Parez was arraigned on the charge and in which he pleaded not guilty. This one page document is written in ink and signed for the court clerk by the deputy clerk. The document bears the stamp of the First District Court of Graham County. The first two documents are attached to 3) Minute Entry of Trial, dated May 3, 1886, in which the trial jury found Parez “guilty as charged in the indictment.” This document is also handwritten and bears the stamp of the First District Court of Graham County. All of the documents are attached to 4) Minute of Judgement, dated May 13, 1886, in which the Territory of Arizona sentenced Parez to a prison term of two years. This document is a printed form which is filled in (in ink) and signed for the court clerk by the deputy clerk. The document bears the stamp of the First District Court of Graham County. These documents offer a fascinating look into the justice system in early Arizona Territory.
