Handmade Jewish Sefer Altar Curtain

DATE
Year: 1968
Decade: 1960s
Century: 20th (1901-2000)
Notes: August 1968

This beautiful dark red curtain with gold details is a handmade Jewish Sefer altar curtain made in Argentina for a Sephardic family.

Scholar Avi Gold tells us that, “The text in Hebrew says that the curtain was dedicated by a Mr. Isaac Salem and his sons in memory of his wife. I’m not entirely certain of how his wife’s name is pronounced. And then the abbreviation מנ”א, which refers to the month of Av on the Jewish calendar, and the year התשכ”ח, which is 5728, i.e. 1968. I checked a 1968 calendar, and found that indeed, most of the month of Av was within August that year. The first several days of Av were in July that year. So, my estimate of August, 1968 as the dating stands.”
