Hanging Scroll of Russian Ship

Century: 19th (1801-1900)

Japanese woodblock print Kakejiku Hanging Scroll of a Russian Ship (Oroseiya Fune).

The second line reads, “Sea surface miles, (this ship) is also called a Mongolian (Mōko) fellows ship.”

According to scholar Peter Kornicki, “This lacks a date and the ship doesn’t seem to be a steamship, so I imagine that this predates the arrival of Admiral Putyatin in 1853. It may possible date back to the Golovnin episode or even the 1790s when the first Russian mission reached Japan.”

Andrew Gebert, “The second line says that these are also referred to as ‘Mongolian ships’.”
