Hinawa-jū (Japanese Matchlock Guns) Manuscript

Japanese manuscript book on ‘Hinawa-jū’ (Japanese Matchlock Guns) which first came to Japan from the Portuguese. ‘Tanegashima’ is the name of the island off Kagoshima where the Portuguese brought these guns.

According to scholar Sugihiko Uchida, “The red crest on the chest seems to suggest that this manuscript was related to the family of Mouri, one of powerful feudal lords.”
