Horse Bridle List Scroll

DATE
Century: 18th (1701-1800)
Notes: mid-1700 century

According to Peter Francis Kornicki FBA, a English Japanologist and Emeritus Professor of Japanese at Cambridge University and Deputy Warden of Robinson College, Cambridge, “Its title is Tazuna mokuroku gojūjō (Bridle list, 50 items) and it is related to the handling of horses. Basically, it consists of a lot of precepts, some of which are commonsensical (eg, ‘be aware of the energy of your horse’). At the end there is a note to say that this has been transmitted (to the copyist) and is not to be shown to others – though it is hard to understand why it should be secret! I would say this is a 17th-century manuscript.”
