Illustrated Account of All Countries Manuscript Book
According to scholar Peter Kornicki, “This is an interesting manuscript book entitled Bankoku ichiran zusetsu (Illustrated account of all countries) written by Furunoya Ishun (also known as Genrin) (1756-1812), who was a doctor practising medicine in Kurashiki. The note on the inside back cover says ‘No matter where this book goes to it should be returned’; the name is the middle, Kōzanrō shachū, is that of the school founded by Furunoya. So the book evidently was kept in his school and could be borrowed by his pupils. This is his only known work and it was published in 1810. This may have been a draft copy used at his school before it was published.”

Included are reports of Ezo (undeveloped Hokkaido); Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa); Taiwan; disputed territories in the north, Kamchatka, Karafuto (South Sakhalin), and Alaska, with reports on Russian activities in these areas; Take Jima; Iwo Jima; Ogasawara Islands; “Kita Amerika” (North America), which is called an undeveloped land compared to Europe; etc.
