Imperial Family Gift Box with Photos

DATE
Year: 1912
Decade: 1910s
Century: 20th (1901-2000)
Notes: Meiji

Luxuriously hand-painted four-part stacked wooden box gift box with three photos from the Japanese Imperial Family. Three of the parts contain an albumen print of a member of the Meiji Era Imperial family. Each print is mounted to a gilt-ruled card and enclosed in an individual frame. The frames (each ornately hand-painted at the edge) stack together to form a presentation box with a hand-painted cover, which is then enclosed in the original wooden box. The photo is of the Emperor Taisho (son of the Meiji Emperor) Since the Taisho emperor was born in 1879, and this image appears to be of him as the emperor, it can be dated to around 1912. The other images are most likely his wife and possible of his father, or father together with his mother, that is, the Emperor Meiji.
