Japanese Christian Karuta Game

DATE
Decade: 1930s
Century: 20th (1901-2000)
Notes: c1930

Japanese Christian Karuta Card Game titled “Bible Karuta.”  A pre-war Japanese Christian Karuta game.

48 picture cards; 46 matching word cards; original box.

According to scholar Brian Bergstrom, “The card with the text is publication information — there’s the exact address of the company that published it (Koishikawa-ku in Tokyo) and the name of the company:
日曜子供社 – Nichiyō Kodomo-sha (“Sunday’s Children” Company), a subsidiary of 教友社 (Kyōyūsha, “Educational Friendship” Company, which still exists (see link).

The price is also listed there — 10 sen for 1 pack, ‘twice a month’ (so perhaps this was a price for borrowing, not owning, a common thing for publications in pre-war Japan).

Full address is:
東京小石川区関口台町十九
19-Sekiguchidai-chō, Koishikawa-ku, Tokyo.

The district named in the address, “Koishikawa-ku”, existed between 1878 and 1947, which may help to date it.”
