Japanese Portrait of a Retainer to the Feudal Lord of Saga

DATE
Decade: 1860s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)
Notes: c1869

The retainer is wearing arm covers with the Christian cross. During the Edo period Christianity was outlawed by the Shogun often with the punishment of death. The Nabeshima clan of Saga was located very close to Nagasaki, an area in which there were Kakure Kirishitan or Hidden Christians.
