Japanese Red Urushi Lacquerware Dish with a Gold Star
A Japanese red urushi lacquerware dish with a gold star.
The inscription on the back reads, “In Commemoration of the Deployment to the front of the 50th Infantry Regiment.”
According to scholar Bucky Sheftall, “That is most definitely an Imperial Japanese Army star device, against a field in the same red that would be used for felt rank insignia tabs on uniform collars. The regiment was activated as a mountain operations specialist unit for Russo-Japanese War action. Later saw action in both the Siberian Expedition and the Manchurian Incident. Was wiped out defending the Marianas Island of Tinian, which the Americans wanted as a base for launching B-29 attacks on Japan. (Both the Enola Gay and Bocks Car — atomic bombers of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively — took off from Tinian).”
