Japanese hand-painted manuscript book: “Geography and Astronomy” (Chikyu Raku Setsu Ben). Following Perry’s opening of Japan, the Japanese were interested in science and geography, and this volume was compiled by an early Japanese educator based on Western learning.
According to scholar Romulo Ehalt, “ ‘Excerpts from the Outline of the Earth’ I haven’t seen this version before, but it seems to be based on a very famous astronomy treaty from the Edo period.”
