Japanese Print Album with propaganda prints of war and battle scenes from 1937 to 1939, the year the album was published. Included are many prints depicting air battles, fighting in Shanghai, the Rape of Nanking (from a Japanese perspective), the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, etc, culminating in Japanese forces fighting the Russian tank units at Nomonhan, or Khalkin Gol. Again, this is entirely from a Japanese perspective and it’s simply fascinating to see how the subject matter was treated, especially since news of this event was restricted in the mainstream Japanese media. This album was published just a few months after the fighting at Nomonhan. During 1937-38, Japanese troops began to probe the Mongolian border looking for weaknesses in their defenses. In 1939, Japanese troops set up a defensive position in the Khalkin Gol Mountains. The Soviets, concerned for the security of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, sent their best commander, Lieutenant General Georgi Zhukov, to stabilize the region. This was done through the use of superior Soviet mechanized tank units. In the end, the Japanese 23rd Division was wiped out, with nearly 18,000 dead.
