Scholar Tianyuan Huang commented, “The title reads 古今英雄くらべ (“Heroes of Past and Present”). Some of the figures discussed include 毛利元就/Mōri Motonari from the 16th century, 廉希憲/Lian Xixian (or J: Ren Kiken) from the Yuan Dynasty of the 13th century, Confucius, the Buddha 釈迦, and 三条実美/Sanjō Sanetomi of the late Tokugawa and the Meiji period. A brief biographical account accompanies each of the “heroes” included in this title, too.”

Comparisons of Traditional Edo and Modern Meiji.   The front cover in the design of a Banzuke (Official Ranking). Woodblock prints comparing traditional and modern Japanese society, including a rare print of Christ being crucified.
