Julius Erving Ebony Magazine American Black Achievement Award

Year: 1983
Decade: 1980s
Century: 20th (1901-2000)

After five iconic seasons with the Virginia Squires and the New York Nets in the ABA, which saw him win three MVPs, two titles, and redefine the small forward position, Dr. J took his medicine bag to the City of Brotherly Love to prove he could do the same in the NBA.

Despite a lineup that included, Erving, McGinnis, Collins, The Prince of Mid-Air, and Chocolate Thunder, the 76ers lost to the Blazers in the finals. They lost in the finals twice more, to the Lakers, in 1980 and 1982. In 1983, The Doctor finally got the NBA Championship he desperately sought for seven long years, teaming with Big Mo, Little Mo, Iavaroni, and Andrew Toney.

After the season, Ebony Magazine presented Julius with this award. “Fifth Annual Ebony American Black Achievement Award Presented to Julius ‘Dr. J’ Erving for significant and enduring achievement in athletics, 1983.”
