Extraordinary Accounts from Around the Sea. Japanese manuscript journal by Ostsuki Gentaku and Shimura Hiroatsu. It is the record of the interview of Wakamiya-Maru sailors who were shipwrecked, lived in Russia, and traveled the world before coming back to Japan. The Wakamiyamaru which, while en route to the capital of Edo, was blown off-course in a storm. It had left the port of Ishimaki in Sendai on November 27, 1793, carrying rice and lumber, with a crew of 16. Drifting in the Pacific Ocean for nearly half a year, they finally landed in the Aleutian Islands on May 10th, 1794. The crew was taken to St. Petersburg, where they had an audience with Tsar Alexander I and saw many interesting things: a balloon flight, a concert, an astronomy observatory, ship and military technology, agriculture, etc. In 1803 they were allowed to return to Japan as part of the Rezanov Mission, the first Russian global circumnavigation, on the ship Nadezhda. It took 16 months to reach the port of Nagasaki, in September, 1804. One of the Japanese crew members became an interpreter and returned to Russia with Rezanov.
