Letters from Fillmore and Perry to the Japanese

DATE
Year: 1853
Decade: 1850s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

A manuscript containing four letters from Millard Fillmore and Commodore Perry to the Japanese.
They mention opening Japan for trade, shipwrecked sailors, whaling ships, etc. The final letter appears to be Perry’s white flag message, in which he tells the Japanese to raise the white flag they have sent them if they intend peace, otherwise they will go to war.
