MATERIAL: Hand-Drawn
TYPE: Manuscript
DIMENSIONS: 10.5 x 14 inches each.
COMPONENTS: 27 bound sheets of very thin rice paper
NOTES: A guess that this is an inventory of items stored in the Shosoin, the 8th century imperial repository in Todaiji temple in Nara. It could also be related to the Kashima and Katori shrines. There could be a connection to the Ofuna festival at the Kashima Shrine in the Ibaraki prefecture.

There’s quite a mix of items including ritual implements, musical instruments, dishes and platters, rosaries, round lidded containers that could be reliquaries, hand held censer (ekōro 柄香炉), prayer beads / rosary (juzu 数珠), gongs (kei 磬) that are suspended from a wooden frame, often used in temples, bamboo mouth organ, flutes.

There may be a drawing here of a ritual mirror with an image of the Kasuga deer. There are many examples representing the Kasuga deity in Nara as a deer. The current document could of course be from another location, where the Kasuga deity is also worshipped, for example, Ibaraki prefecture.
