Manuscript Manual to Identify Swordmakers

DATE
Decade: 1700s
Century: 18th (1701-1800)

According to Peter Francis Kornicki FBA, a English Japanologist and Emeritus Professor of Japanese at Cambridge University and Deputy Warden of Robinson College, Cambridge, “It is a very well executed manuscript but the title slip has fallen off the cover and there is no other indication of the title. The contents show how you can identify the swordsmith from marks on each sword. It looks to me like an 18th century manuscript.”

Scholar Sugihiko Uchida commented, “It seems to be a kind of manual to identify swordsmiths.”
